Rwanda Trading Company helped establish this washing station early in 2015, providing some much needed capital and expertise for its construction. The station sits in Rwanda’s Western Province, a region that has quite recently become known for producing incredible specialty micro-lots!
The station is supplied by a network of around 700 small-holder farmers who sell ripened cherry directly to the station. The farms are nestled throughout the areas rolling hills and mountains that look over the stunning lake Kivu, shared with the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.
This is a washed lot meaning that after the cherry is harvested, immature green cherries are picked out and over-ripe cherries are separated in floatation tanks. Pulped parchment is fermented for 24-48 hours depending on the local weather conditions at the time. Then the clean, washed parchment is set aside for drying. All the coffees are dried on raised beds anywhere from 15-22 days prior to dry milling.
