Background: It takes a real passion and tenacious dedication to produce coffee at San Carlos. After 40 years working for other producers, Carlos Bautista decided to go out on his own and didn’t realise quite how perfectly suited to coffee production his farm would be high up the mountain. Battling the treacherous road winding up to his farm that rises from 1200-1700MASL in 1.6km, Carlos Bautista is known for his positivity and resolve. Truly a labor of love, Carlos personally tends to his coffee trees weeding, fertilizing and pruning and waiting until the optimum time to pick each cherry. After the cherries are depulped, fermented and washed, they are sent to Beneficio La Guadalupana in Ocotal where the coffee is dried for 12- 18 days on raised African beds and 100% shaded.
This year is the first that Carlos has been offered a real price for his coffee. After selling for years making a loss on exploitative markets, he is proud to finally be able to receive fair payment and sell to people who appreciate a high quality coffee with identity.
