Background: Having been a producer for 24 years and owning several different farms, Orlando Carbajal certainly knows coffee. The Typica variety is produced on ‘Plantanares’, a wellstructured farm with 25 blocks of coffee that Orlando has owned for 5 years. Orlando I keen on improving his production techniques, and implements many sustainable management strategies including coffee shading with banana and peach trees, as well as the woody Guamo. Orlando also works to conserve water in the system by seeding in contour lines and maintaining good ground cover between rows. Organic fertilisers are used and weed control is conducted mechanically, or using a machete to save on chemical use.
