With an average production of 12 million bags per year, the southern region of Minas Gerais is the largest producer of coffee in Brazil. This region has been producing coffee since the 1850’s. A mild climate averaging 23° C and altitudes from 850 to 1,250 meters produces coffee long recognised as excellent for espresso. While some of the largest coffee producing properties in Brazil are located in Sul de Minas, more than half are small to medium-sized farms. The most cultivated varieties are Catuai and Novo Mundo.
