Background: Finca La Aurora, owned and operated by Roberto Brenes and his family since 2006, is located along the Panamian border with Costa Rica and has been dedicated to the production of high quality Geisha (Finca Auromar) and SHB coffee (Finca Alma). The coffee is grown in semi‐shade environment provided by endemic trees and the high altitude Hass avocado trees. All Auromar coffees are processed by Café de Eleta S.A., a state of the art coffee plant and mill which includes a modern laboratory for cupping and hand selection of the best coffees. Auromar has a strong commitment to the environment and its workers. Most of the workers come from vulnerable ethnic backgrounds who lack material and social resources. Auromar provides them with facilities and educational opportunities. The workers live in modern and hygienic housing and also benefit from the safety and efficiency infrastructure built into the plantation. Roberto was previously the director of the Panamanian stock exchange and ex‐director of Panama’s Central Bank. He also spent his past life as an active member of the National Civic Crusade who challenged the dictatorship of General Noriega and as a result spent a few years in exile.
