The Jiwaka province in Papua New Guinea borders the highest mountain in PNG (Mt Wilhelm) and the local agricultural industry is supported by the Waghi River. Jiwaka was once part of the Western Highlands Province and the Jimi Valley is one of three districts that make up Jiwaka province. Coffee production in PNG is somewhat similar to Ethiopia, in that much of the coffee is grown by smallholders in garden plots. The Jimi Valley region comprises a combination of smallholders, blockholders and plantations, all benefiting from the rich volcanic soil of the area.
Nowek Coffee operate and manage processing mills Papua New Guinea from their office in the provincial capital of Goroka. They have been processing coffee since 1990 when they opened their first wet mill. They have since opened a seedling nursery, a dry mill and sun-drying fields.
