PNG Kimel Peaberry (green)


The Kimel plantation was first established in 1974 by an Australian named Bobby Gibbs; it is now fully owned by traditional landowners the Opais, being the main tribe in this area. The estate is located in the Western Highlands in the Wahgi Valley approximately 50 Km south of Mount Hagen, near a small town called Banz.

The Western Highlands area is the largest coffee producing province in Papua New Guinea (PNG), with the Wahgi valley and the Dei Council, in particular, which the estate boarders, produce some of the finest coffees in PNG.

It's been a while since carrying the normal PNG Kimel, which usually has nice chocolately notes with some spice. The peaberry variant is a different beast though: Medium intensity, sweet caramel maltiness, more pronounced spice, and some orange peel on the finish. The coffee has a silky texture, a nice pairing with the chocolate-malt notes. As the cup cools, the spices intensify.

Roasting Notes:
Up to a full city roast - just the start of second crack seems to be the sweet spot, although I suspect it would handle slightly deeper as well. As with most peaberrys, watch the heat level - the small size of the beans means they are easy to burn.

Great Coffee

A real great coffee. I enjoy it most by blending 2 batches (50/50), one batch just before 2nd crack and the second batch just into second crack. In my opinion it's at its best as a darker roaster.
Nice full flavoured coffee

This is a nice full flavoured coffee that kept improving a week after roasting and is tasty as a single origin coffee.

I had no trouble hearing first and second crack on my Behmor Plus. I reduced the roasting temperature by 50% at first crack (by pressing P3) to roast more gently to second crack.

A little effort will be rewarded

This bean was a bit tricksy to roast in my popper. There were hardly any audible signs of first/second crack. I roasted it based on the colour of the beans, and roasted for a lot longer than I'd usually roast.

As a doppio espresso on day 2, it had a lovely choc-berry aroma. The first sip was sweet/acid with a creamy mouthfeel and good syrupy body. Flavours of banana, butterscotch and almond.

It balances well with other origins for a lively blend.
