This region is one of the main sugar cane producing regions in the world. Panela is an unrefined sugar, widely recognised for its unique caramel flavour, fine grain texture and beautiful golden colour.
Panela is one of the only sugars which is not refined, and therefore offers unmatched nutritional value because unlike other sweeteners, it is not separated from the molasses during the pressing and drying process. This means that the natural vitamins, minerals and protein are retained.
In Colombia, Panela is not only used as a sweetener for cooking and baking. It is also dissolved in water with ice plus a touch of lemon and served as an energy boosting summer drink.
